Betting the Emmys this week? Well, sizing up the return for Best Comedy is perhaps a short special this year than it has been recently. While NBC’s "30 Rock" was superior, with wins the last three years, there’s a brand-new kid on the block this season, and it is "Modern Family," ABC’s first-year tongue-lashing that has garnered the network its first nomination in this category since 2007, and stacks up as the betting favorite at -160. The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will be shown on NBC live at 8 PM ET on Sunday (August 29).

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards

Los Angeles (NBC)

Betting Odds to Win

Best Comedy Series

Modern Family -160

30 Rock +300

The Office +900

Curb Your Enthusiasm +1400

Glee +400

Nurse Jackie +1500

LA MODE FAMILY, the big Emmy betting favorite here at -160, may not be in the "freight train" classification like "Mad Men," but it has, to an extent, charmed broadcast television on storm. Unlike a lot of sitcoms that find their way onto network TV, this one is actually FUNNY, and there are few people around who can do this off like Ed O’Neill, who is disappointingly not among the individual nominees (but hey, I thought he should have gotten something for "John from Cincinnati" too). It’s the worst comedy yon rather dysfunctional strain surroundings since "Arrested Development," which by the way, won an Emmy in this category in its first season as well. With this show, ABC gets its first comedy nomination since "Ugly Betty" in 2007.

I have to admit that I am a sucker for 30 ROCK (+300 in the Emmy betting odds), which I think has the best writing of any comedy on television. But I’ve got to fancy that by now, with something fresh on the block that could really offer a challenge ("Modern Family" or even "Glee") the reign of three straight wins in this category has most likely encounter to an end.

Before the hie of "30 Rock," THE OFFICE (+900 in the Emmy betting odds) took profoundly the prize in this category in 2006 and has been nominated every year since. Steve Carell is leaving the betray when his engage expires at the end of the 2010-11 season, at which time it will have to improvise and overcome if it wants to stay on the display, but I don’t see an award being part of the "farewell."

It is quite possible that Edie Falco, who is a dearest of the award shows, is going to gt an award for Best Comedy Actress since ANGEL OF MERCY JACKIE. She is indeed the even cold hard cash favorite in that category. Her series, albeit, is actually the longshot in the Emmy betting odds at +1500. I admit that it shouldn’t be the favorite, but something still doesn’t make sense there.

Coming in at +1400 is CONTROL YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Thank you, I already have.

I deliver to admit that I do not watch Fox’s EXHILARATION, which is listed at +400 in the Emmy betting odds, but I do believe that we are looking at a possible value pick in this category,. The show has gotten good ratings because a new program (it didn’t hurt that "American Idol" was the lead-in someone is concerned the flier episode) and is starting to pick up important awards, including the Golden Globe, and recently, the television Critics Association, which named it Program of the Year. It has 19 Emmy nominations. This is the show that might offer a decent price in the Emmy betting odds.

JAY’S PLAY: GLEE (+400) **

(Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
